Custom Cabinet Finishes

Color gets the attention. Preparation creates the finish.

Whether cabinetry is painted or stained, the final appearance depends on numerous steps that happen before you ever see the finished door.

Painted vs. Stained Cabinetry

Paint creates a more uniform color.

Stain celebrates wood’s natural character.

Neither is universally better.

They’re simply different design languages.

Wood Species Matters

Different species have different grain patterns and characteristics.

Walker offers standard species, including maple, quarter-sawn white oak, walnut, cherry, alder, and hickory, with additional species available for custom applications.

Painted Cabinet Materials

Material selection matters here too.

Walker uses MDF panels in painted doors because they’re less susceptible to the expansion and contraction patterns visible in hardwood panels.

Preparation Is Everything

Sanding and surface preparation create the foundation.

A premium finish can’t compensate for poor preparation.

Stain Celebrates Natural Variation

Wood is natural.

Variation isn’t necessarily a defect—it’s part of the material.

Two boards from the same species can absorb stain differently or display different grain.

That’s part of what makes wood cabinetry beautiful.

Think About the Whole Room

Cabinet finish should coordinate with:

  • Countertops
  • Flooring
  • Tile
  • Hardware
  • Lighting
  • Wall colors

The goal isn’t choosing the prettiest sample.

It’s choosing the finish that belongs in the overall design.

When you do a renovation, you want it to last, not something that has to be redone every decade, which is why we work hard at staying up to date on current cabinet trends, checking out what is here to stay and what is merely a fad.

Designing for Aging in Place & Individuals with Disabilities — to Make Life Easier

Custom cabinets are tailored to your specific needs and lifestyle. Designing cabinets that accommodate seniors who desire to age in place, as well as those with disabilities, is something more and more designers are becoming aware of.

What many homeowners don’t initially factor in, however, is the impact of supply and demand during a renovation. It’s easy to assume that if you’d like a new kitchen by Thanksgiving, starting in the summer will be plenty of time—but that’s not always the case. Project timelines can be extended due to current demand, material availability, and manufacturer lead times, especially for custom or specialty items.

Nature offers the perfect solution to this situation, and an increasing number of designers are looking to it for inspiration. Let’s talk about natural style and how to use it to get the balance you need in the home.

This budget guide will set the tone for the entire project and help us determine exactly which products to show you. In this blog, we will share what a reasonable bathroom renovation budget should include and provide a general estimate of the total cost.
