Sustainability at Walker Woodworking

At Walker Woodworking, our commitment to craftsmanship goes hand in hand with our respect for the environment. From the beginning, we’ve believed that building custom cabinetry should reflect not only the homeowner’s vision but also a responsibility to the world around us. By combining time-honored woodworking techniques with mindful material choices, we create cabinetry that is both beautiful and sustainable — built to last, not to be replaced.

Local and Responsible Material Selection

We proudly use domestic plywood from Columbia Forest Products, whose PureBond® plywood technology eliminates the use of formaldehyde and promotes healthier indoor air quality. Sourcing from a supplier located close to our manufacturing facility helps us reduce transportation emissions while supporting American-made materials. We also select hardwoods and veneers from regional suppliers who follow responsible forestry practices, ensuring our resources are renewable for generations to come.

Columbia Forest Products has several milling locations domestically; the closest one to our facility is located in Old Fort, North Carolina – just 10 minutes from Black Mountain and 30 minutes from Asheville—home of the iconic Biltmore Mansion.

We also partner with Blum, a leading manufacturer of cabinet hardware and accessories has a facility located close by in Stanley, North Carolina. Their commitment to precision engineering, long product life, and environmentally conscious manufacturing aligns perfectly with our own values.

By choosing Walker Woodworking, you’re not just investing in high-quality cabinetry, but also in the growth and sustainability of your local community.

Smart Manufacturing Practices

Our dedication to sustainability extends beyond the materials we use. Inside our shop, we focus on efficiency and waste reduction at every stage of production. Careful planning allows us to maximize yield from every sheet and board, reuse offcuts whenever possible, and recycle wood scraps.

We also embrace Lean Manufacturing principles, which emphasize continuous improvement, workflow efficiency, and minimizing waste — whether that waste comes from materials, time, or motion. By refining our processes and reducing unnecessary steps, we create a more organized and productive environment that benefits both our team and our customers. Lean manufacturing helps us maintain consistent quality, shorten production times, and use resources responsibly — all while ensuring every cabinet meets our high standards of craftsmanship.

Finishes that Last

Durability is a key part of sustainability. While we value environmentally friendly finishes, we also recognize the importance of a product that endures. That’s why we use a post-catalyzed conversion varnish, a professional-grade finish that offers exceptional protection, clarity, and moisture resistance. Although not water-based, this finish extends the lifespan of our cabinetry — a more sustainable choice due to its longevity and reduced need for refinishing or replacement.

Built to Endure

True sustainability means crafting products that stand the test of time. Our cabinetry is designed for decades of use, built with quality materials and expert craftsmanship to meet your family’s needs for years to come. Each project reflects our belief that doing things the right way — with care, integrity, and respect for the environment — always leads to the best result.

Our Commitment to a Better Future

Every choice we make — from the materials we select to the partners we trust — reflects our dedication to doing what’s right for our customers, our community, and the planet.
